Weight Loss for Women Over 50

Weight loss for women over 50 can sometimes be challenging, difficult, and frustrating. As we mature, there are factors that make losing weight even more challenging, such as menopause. Menopause can play a large part in the effects of weight loss in women over 50.

Having A Great Quality of Life is Important - Weight Loss for Women Over 50

Did you know there are over 100 different variations of menopausal experiences and symptoms range from mild to severe? Some symptoms of menopause are:

– weight gain
– hot flashes
– night sweats
– osteoporosis
– fatigue
– urinary problems
– insomnia
– hair loss
– problems with focusing and learning

For more information about menopause, please visit my article “Weight Loss and Menopause“.

We still want to have that great quality of life we’ve always had, maintain energy for our families, and feel great like we did when we were younger. However, sources say women will gain an average of 12 to 15 pounds between the ages of 45 and 55 which is typically during the menopausal years.

Estrogen, progesterone and testosterone hormones play a large role in weight control in the body. However, there could be other reasons for gaining this extra weight:
• Slow metabolism
• Reduced physical activity
• Stress
• Change in eating habits
• Use of medication
• Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol

As we gain these extra pounds, instead of the weight distributing evenly throughout the body, it tends to accumulate around the abdomen. This extra weight can also lead to medical conditions including:
• Heart disease
• High blood pressure
• Osteoarthritis
• Insulin resistance (increasing the risk of diabetes)

Metabolism describes how a person’s body turns consumed food into energy and changes as a person ages. The body turns muscle into fat as we age which is especially problematic for women whose bodies are already made up of more fat than men’s bodies.

Metabolism can also be affected by fluctuating hormones. You should speak with your doctor if you have hormonal concerns. He/she will be able to give you more information around hormones. In a nutshell, what does all this mean? It means women can gain weight even if we exercise and change our diet.

Women Can Gain Weight Even With a Good Diet - Weight Loss for Women Over 50

It is important for you to know and understand what works for YOU. What works for your best friend, for example, may not work for you. Therefore, when it comes to your health, it is always a good idea to first consult with your doctor about any health concerns. Doing your own research is great so that you know the right questions to ask your doctor so that you may have a productive conversation with him/her.

It is also important to educate yourself on why your body reacts differently to certain foods and/or exercise – especially during the menopausal years. To combat the negative effects of weight gain, stay in tune with your body as it is giving you warning signs.

Talking with your doctor is a great place to start. Communicating with other women in the same situation can be an incredible support system, providing what you need to stay healthy and reach your individual goals. That’s where this site can be a great resource for all of us. We can encourage each other as well as learn from each other’s experiences. You can also come here for diet and exercise information as well as reviews.

Finding what works for YOU is the key. There are several options to explore but patience, knowledge and support are important. The main thing is don’t give up. Becoming sedentary is not the answer so continue to move – it can only help in the grand scheme of things.

Get started now with going down the right path and soon you will be on your way to achieving your weight loss goals. You may have to work a little harder to get there, but the end benefits of reaching your goals are rewarding. 1. As a male, I find this site very interesting. It seems to me that the population in general is gaining weight. I believe it has a lot to do with our food supply not providing proper nutrition due to over-fertilizing. I think the public should be aware that there are great herbs and natural supplements available.

Keep up the good work. I wish you great success.

    1. Thank you very much for visiting my site and for the well-wishes Ray. I am happy you find my site to be interesting and that you stopped by to make a comment. I have had conversations with others about the quality of our food now with respect to hormones and antibiotics. While we can still obtain nutrition from certain foods, we can definitely use herbs, teas, and other natural ingredients to obtain a healthy lifestyle. Once again, thank you for the comment. I wish you well also.

  3. I am dreading hitting menopause. I watch other girls going through this at work, some of them younger than me, and it looks horrid! I am still getting my periods very regularly so it may be a while still before I go through it. Do you think if I lose the excess weight I am carrying, have a good exercise regime in place, and a healthy diet, that when I hit menopause it will make it easier?

    1. I understand you dreading that period of your life. However, everyone is different and symptoms of menopause differ from person to person. At this point, there just isn’t a way to know how menopause will affect you in the future. In the meantime, continue to stay on the journey to a healthy you.
