Do I Need A Personal Trainer? My Journey

About two months ago, I decided to seriously embark upon my own fitness journey.  I decided it was time to  get even more serious about my goals.  I knew it was time to step outside my comfort zone and obtain a personal trainer. I have never worked out with a personal trainer before and didn’t really know how to find one. After doing some research, I landed in the right place. You may be asking yourself the same question – do I need a personal trainer? If so, keep reading this article to determine the answer for yourself.

What are your goals?WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS?
Everyone has their own personal fitness goals. Do you want to lose weight, tone up, gain muscle, get stronger, or all of the above? For me, I wanted to lose weight and tone up. I was looking for a personal trainer that would help me do that and also provide a nutrition plan. (Note: One thing to keep in mind is that with the nutrition part of it, states may vary. In my state, a trainer must have a nutrition certification in order to provide nutrition plans to a client.
Therefore, ask that during your personal trainer interview session.)

I have a friend who is working with a personal trainer in a different city, but I asked her some questions about her trainer experience so I would at least have a baseline for expectations.  One thing you may do, initially, is some fact-gathering from someone you know, personally, working with a trainer and getting good results. Inquire about the name of their fitness trainer, their gym, the cost of their sessions, if you need a gym membership, and if they have a nutrition certification (if that’s what you’re looking for in a trainer).  One thing I found out is that some personal trainers work with you in your home. They bring the equipment needed for your workout. So keep that in mind when determining your schedule and personal needs.

After I did my initial fact-gathering, I used a professional app. You may feel free to search around on line to find apps. However, I used one that worked amazingly well for my needs. It’s called Thumbtack. It is an app that can connect you with any professional you may be looking for, including the below to name a few:

> fitness trainers
> dog walkers
> movers
> cleaning services
> wedding photographers
> contractors

Once I signed up and indicated in the app what professional service I was searching, I was connected right away to personal trainers in my area. The great thing about using a tool like this is that messages could be exchanged between me and the personal trainers within the app – instead of directly to my personal, cell phone.

AHaving a tour of the gym is a good ideafter gathering the initial information from the list of trainers, I set up a time to speak with them by phone to ask my initial questions. Depending on the answers I received over the phone, I then set up a face-to-face interview at their gym.  Once I arrived at the gym,  during our discussion, I was given an overview of the training session expectations and a tour. It’s great to actually see the environment you will be working out in during your sessions. Some questions you may want to keep in mind to ask yourself and determine what is best for you are:

1) Will your sessions be in a group setting?
2) Will you have separate one-0n-0ne  sessions?
3) Will there be several other people working out in the same area?

After I was comfortable with the price, environment and person I would be working with, I decided on the gym. I love the gym I chose. It is one-on-one training, in a smaller, personal environment with someone who will not torture me to give me the results I am looking for. She is personable and explains the correct way to execute the moves for not only safety, but for maximum results. When asked  what is the advantage of working out with a personal trainer, my personal trainer said, “They hold you accountable – more than you would do yourself”. I totally agree with that. I could continue to work out by myself in my basement as I’ve done in the past. However, I knew I needed more than that and working out with a personal trainer was just what I needed for that extra motivation and push.

Do exercises that incorporate overall strength and core

My three-day-per-week workouts consist of exercises for the entire body. According to my personal trainer, it’s best to do exercises that incorporate overall strength and core. When you think about it, there are so many daily activities we do that incorporate the core. Therefore, having core strength is extremely important.

She also suggests starting out three times per week at first, then increase it up to five times per week. I found myself wanting to increase my workout to give me better results. Therefore, I challenge myself during my workouts and have increased my cardio.

Consistent exercise increases strengthAfter almost eight weeks of working out and eating nutritiously, I can definitely tell a difference with my body. My core, arms and legs are much stronger, my endurance is much better, and I’m gaining muscle. I’m eating so much healthier and my energy level is through the roof.

I am so glad I made the decision to obtain a personal trainer. What a difference in my life! If you are asking yourself “do I need a personal trainer?” Push yourself to say yes.

  1. This article is encouraging to get in better shape. It seems over the years raising a family, you don’t take care of yourself as you once did prior to having kids. At least that’s what happened to me. I used to love going to the gym back in the day. My brother introduced it to me back then and I enjoyed it. I am encouraged to take better care of myself. Maybe now that you are past that point in your life, you can get back into it. Take it slowly and work your way back into the gym. Maybe start out by walking, then take a few classes of yoga. There are some great walking programs you can do at home as well. For example Walk It Off in 30 days with Leslie Sansone is awesome.   2. Wow! What a brilliant idea with the app. I need a trainer. I am going to take a look into that app myself and also I like how you have done some research and picked out your personal trainer.

    I haven’t trained in years and it’s about more than 20 years ago. I used to do a lot of kickboxing and I can almost feel the pain I will be getting the next day when I have done an hour training or so. So the CBD oil rub you write about will also come in handy.

Using the app was the best way for me finding a great personal trainer. Doing the research is the same as doing an interview. Finding someone compatible who can help you reach your goals is very important. If you don’t do that and the relationship doesn’t work for you, you’re not going to enjoy working out. If you don’t enjoy the workouts, you won’t stick with the program. So having the compatibility is key.That’s awesome you used to do kickboxing. Maybe you can slowly get back into it.
