Sticking to Your Health & Fitness Goals

As we enter a brand new year, many people are filled with excitement and motivation – especially when it comes to the areas of health and fitness. From things like Dry January, ditching the fast food, and buying gym memberships, intentions are always the best at the beginning of a new year. Why then do so many fail to maintain this enthusiasm by mid-month? There are important things you can do to make sure you are sticking to your health and fitness goals.

It’s important to set S.M.A.R.T. goals. When setting your goals, you should make sure they are:
S = Specific
M = Measurable
A = Attainable
R = Realistic
T = Time-based

Not setting these types of goals, you can possibly be sabotaging your results. Why? Because they may not be realistic. If, for example, you want to lose twenty pounds in two weeks, that may not be an attainable or realistic goal.

GoalWhen it comes to setting goals, they have to be individual to you and not just goals that are trendy or that you think you should be setting.

One of the best things you can do before setting your goals is to sit down and get clear on how you want your health and fitness to look and then set goals based on that.

Another good thing to do would be to make an appointment with a doctor to get a general check up. If you have a specific area of your health that you’d like to focus on improving, then you could also make an appointment with someone like Hartmuth Bittner so that you can then set specific goals. Once again, setting goals are good so that  you are actually moving towards a very desirable and noticeable outcome.

Although it’s great to dream big and set lofty goals, one of the main reasons that people can fail when setting their goals is that they go overboard. When setting your goals, try not to start off picking a huge amount of goals. Start off with a few. Starting off too lofty can take away your focus from the things that are truly important.

It’s easy to get carried away with the excitement and enthusiasm when setting goals, but the best thing to do is start with 3-5 main goals you want to achieve for the year. Once you hit those goals, you can start adding more in, and this way you won’t be completely overwhelmed.


Another reason that so many fail with their goals is by trying to push themselves too hard. For example, someone who’s never been to the gym before will suddenly start going every other day – or even every day, and soon this will become too much. So it’s best to start slowly by going maybe 1-2 times per week and then building it up from there.

If you do join a gym, find out if you can connect with a fitness trainer. A trainer will work with you to make sure your form is right when lifting weights. give you cardio exercises, and give you nutritional advice.

One of the keys to hitting your goals is to make sure you’re doing tasks that you actually enjoy doing. For example, if you hate the gym but want to lose weight, then you’re not going to stick to your goals if you’re forcing yourself to go there and will end up sabotaging your efforts.

Find alternatives to your workouts. There are so many other things to do.

Walking (In-home DVDs)
Bike riding
The possibilities are endless! Choose what you like and get up and move.
