I get it, we are all striving to have that healthy lifestyle. The one where we feel incredible, look good, and are generally living our best lives. It isn’t easy to achieve, and many of us can fall off the wagon from time to time. But the great thing about your general health is that taking care of our bodies overall, means slip ups like occasional bad meals or neglecting our exercise regime can easily be rectified. Keep reading to find out about the importance of taking care of your health.

Rewind back to the start though, how do you even get to that balanced life where the cheat days are not set backs? How do you find that you can take care of your general health and feel this good? The decision to start is often the first step, and it is having your reason and motivation to do it. Why is it you want to feel better? What is it that you want to improve? One of the most important words in these questions is want. You have to want it, otherwise after a few days the motivation will flounder and you will struggle not to revert back to old ways and habits. So if you have the “want” and motivation, how do you stay on top of your game?

I thought I would share with you some of the basic aspects of taking care of your general health. Some are easier than others but a combination of them can have you looking and feeling your best in no time at all.

Drink plenty of water

This is one of the most basic principles of taking care of your general health, so simple, that in fact it can often be overlooked. But this is a big mistake. Water is nature’s natural detox, and while it may be bland and unimaginative to drink, it is incredibly good for you. The recommended allowance is to drink over two liters (six to eight glasses) of water a day. This can seem quite a lot but actually, over the course of the day it is easier than you would think. Water can help with things like skin tone and energy levels. It can help you to have a better quality of sleep at night and would you believe it could even help with moods. Most people tend to start with this, and develop the habit of keeping a water bottle close by so that they can sip and drink it as and when they need to. It serves as a good reminder to keep drinking that water.

Another basic thing to do, but actually one of the most effective, is consuming a balanced diet. This isn’t about any extreme diets you may want to try. There is no point in trying to cut certain food groups out or starve yourself, as while it may give you some short term results in terms of weight loss, they are rarely sustainable. The best thing to do is eat balanced meals to lose weight slowly over time so that your weight loss can be sustainable.

The same can be said for using detoxes and diets, while they work really well initially, it is what you follow them up with that makes the difference, rather than going back to old habits, as then the good work will be lost.

A balanced diet is exactly what it says, eating all of the food groups and having certain things in moderation. Fat is an important part of your diet, but good fats can be obtained from different foods. General health isn’t always about changing your behaviors, it is also about taking care of you on the inside, and one of the most important organs of your body is your heart. A healthy heart can be ensured in many different ways. It can be the type of food you eat and your exercise.

However, you might also want to take the opportunity to learn more about how to take care of your heart, especially times of distress when either yourself, family member or friend might some sort of heart issue or failure. During courses like this, you tend to pick up other information about how to keep your heart healthy which plays an important role in your overall health.

Exercise is one of the most important aspects of your general health, and is one of the things that people struggle with the most. Exercise, at the beginning of your journey, may not be a pleasant experience. If you are someone who hasn’t worked out, then exercise may not appeal to you, in the beginning. You might feel like you are in pain, out of breath and struggling, but it is all about breaking through that barrier. It is also about perseverance. Start small. Anyone who hasn’t be exercising for some time should really think about small and actionable steps to built up fitness and stamina. That may mean taking a brisk walk, incorporating a swimming session or riding a bike.

Choosing to be active everyday, can make the world of difference to how you feel. However, as mentioned earlier, perseverance is the key to working through the exhaustive feelings to get to the point where you can feel the enjoyment exercise can bring and the endorphins it can produce. Exercise is also linked to mindset and how we feel generally, so it is never going to be a bad venture.

5. Adjust your mindset
Your mindset is just as important as any other aspect of your general health. Your mind is a powerful tool, it controls everything from how you feel to the actions that you take, and it can be overwhelming at times if you don’t nurture your mindset in the best possible way. Positivity is important, and changing your thought process from negative to positive can feel like a big task to overcome. But you will start to feel so much better and so much more accomplished if you take small actionable steps to nurturing your mindset. Whether that is through changing habits, or even exercises that involve your mindset, thoughts and breathing such as yoga or meditation, can make the world of difference to your outlook in life and what you want to do moving forward. It can be hard to change habits at first, and that is completely understandable. If you have a negative mindset then it can feel somewhat forced to change a thought into something positive, but like anything, new habits can be made and over time it won’t seem as forced but more of a natural approach to everyday life.

Self-care is a vital aspect of general health. Ever heard of the phrase burning the candle at both ends? This tends to mean that you are working hard, perhaps in your career or daily routines, by going to bed late and getting up early. Sound familiar? While of course, life can get hectic, and sometimes you can have no control over your schedule, knowing when to stop and take a moment to yourself is vital for your well being. Self-care is very important for anyone.

You need to take the time to do something for yourself. For example, relax by reading a book, go to bed early, give yourself a face mask, or pamper yourself. Do whatever it takes to get some “me” time in. Once you invest in yourself, you will start to see big differences in your output. Your mind and body will feel rested because you will fill yourself up with the things that make you happy and you will then have a full engine to work and live your life.

7. Change routines and habits
Finally, routines and habits need to change in order to for you to incorporate your new healthier lifestyle. With that it means knowing where you can schedule in time for self care, for exercise, and to enjoy balanced meals without rushing. It also means changing up things like skincare routines, and investing more time into yourself.

General health isn’t just about the fundamental side of making sure you are feeling good, it is also about having the right lifestyle in order to live the life you want, and while taking care of everything falls into that, then you and your general health are on the right track. Habits need to be formed such as taking multivitamins in a morning, and meal prepping so you are not tempted to reach for those convenience foods in the evening. Knowing where you need to be and when you have the time for exercise and socializing, keeping that cup filled with all of the good stuff.

    Another great article. Something I need to start doing. I certainly don’t get as much exercise at the moment spending so much time sitting at my work Desk. A change of mindset certainly helps too. Thankfully for me, I am a water drinker and right now because the weather is so hot, even more so.

    This has given me a plan to get back on track with my diet as I have put on a stone already. Including the positive changes I need to add into my lifestyle, there are some things I need to incorporate.

    Such a great post. A lot of common sense stuff here but most times common sense is not that common. Haha!

    Water is so very important and eating healthy is vital. I eat mainly a plant based diet these days and feel great. I also do a lot of meditating which is brilliant for my mind and clarity. Thanks for a great post.

  3. With how rushed and busy our lives are, it can definitely be tough to fit in these recommendations you’ve mentioned into our life routine, but it is really important for our health to do so! My favorite thing you mentioned is that when considering your diet and eating habits, that really you need to do your best to just eat balanced meals! Yes, some of these fad diets help you lose weight, but they are extremely hard to maintain for the long-term and some of them aren’t actually very healthy for your body! I feel the best thing to do is stay away from the fad diets because, as you have stated, they don’t help us over the long run. Eating balanced meals is definitely the best thing to do. I try to live a healthy life style but my enemy is water my wife and 3 daughters are always on me about I never drink water just coffee and cokes.
