The wonderful thing about a healthy lifestyle is that it’s available to everyone. Whoever you are, wherever you live, whatever your gender, whatever the color of your skin and whatever your income, you can benefit from a healthier lifestyle including cleaner eating, regular exercise and safeguards to improve cognitive, psychological and emotional health. A healthy lifestyle doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t care how much money you have to spend on equipment, active wear or supplements. However, your body knows when you haven’t been doing what you are supposed to do. It also knows when you haven’t been putting the effort in, when you’ve cut corners and where you’ve steered wrong.
When you feel that you’re putting the effort in and are dedicated to your health and fitness, it can be extremely frustrating when you don’t see the results you so desperately crave to see in the mirror. If you’ve dedicated to live a healthier lifestyle but don’t feel as though you’re reaping the benefits, you may start to ask yourself, why am I not seeing results?
Below are some possible reasons:
1. You should vary your exercise regimen
Variety is the spice of life…..and exercise. Yes, believe it or not. In the beginning when you start to exercise, because it’s new, it may hurt. You may struggle and even feel like giving up, but then if you persevere, you’ll get better. As time goes on, it starts getting easier. You will feel good about yourself and start to see and feel the results. At this point, you should move on to different exercises. Instead, you stick with this same routine because it’s familiar to you. This is when the problem may start to occur. Over time, after doing the same exercise routine over and over, the results will start to slow down. You will feel like giving up again because you don’t see the results of working out like you did in the beginning and have hit a plateau. Like Einstein said, doing the same thing and expecting different results is the definition of insanity. So, you have to do something different to continue seeing those results.
Shake things up and engage with a range of exercises inside and outside of the gym. Switch up your workouts. Instead of doing all cardio, include some weight training as well. Incorporating weight training is especially important as we age.
If you want to try something like cycling, for example, it is a great workout for the body, mind and soul. As long as you’re safe and mindful of other road users, it can be immensely rewarding. 2. You’re letting your cheat day become cheat weekends
Just as your body benefits from the newness of exercise, that is true to a new diet as well. A cheat meal is proven to help improve your metabolism and store more energy in your muscles as glycogen rather than body fat. However, if you decide to have cheat meals each week, be disciplined with them. If cheat meals become cheat weekends, you’re only cheating yourself. Therefore, be very careful with this decision.
3. You’re being too hard on yourself
One thing to keep in mind is what you see in the mirror isn’t the same as what everyone else sees. Just because you aren’t seeing the benefits you feel you should see (even if your expectations are realistic), doesn’t mean you aren’t benefiting. Some of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle are invisible – like having an improved immune system. That aspect can’t be seen from the outside, but you may feel really great about that part of the new you. Remember, you’re always your own worst critic when it comes to your appearance. You may not see a change for the better, but that doesn’t mean that everybody else can’t see it.
So relax and breathe for a minute. Don’t be so hard on yourself during this time in your life. Instead, enjoy the new journey you’ve decided to embark upon and you will get through it just fine.
